13 May 2010: CANTERBURY COUNTRY celebrated its TENTH BIRTHDAY!
To help celebrate this milestone, the ever popular duo of Camille Te Nahu & Stuie French returned, Keith Glass dropped in from the USA (Keith and Stuie were also on the very first Canterbury Country show), country gold record winner Roland Storm rocked the piano and as always, there was a big surprise. Making a very special appearance was the legendary Australian songstress DIANA TRASK (pictured below right), who’s amazing career included topping the American country charts in the seventies and had now returned to launch her autobiography, ‘Whatever Happened to Diana Trask’ (read more about Diana in the June issue of Capital News magazine). Bob and Diana last worked together in 1980 (when Bob toured in Diana’s band) and in 1976 (in the studios of Festival Records).
It was May 2000 when CANTERBURY COUNTRY was first launched, gradually building a loyal following until today, it has become Sydney’s most popular regular country music show! From an idea of Denis McNamara (then Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club‘s Entertainment Manager) who was scouting for talent in Tamworth, Bob Howe was enlisted to produce and host a concert on the second Thursday of every month that would encompass a variety of country music stars, songwriters and musicians. Bob sends a huge thank you to the Club for its on-going support, the untiring patience of Debbie Kelso, and the expertise of the resident technical production team. The show is now a regular highlight on the calendar for many country music fans and artists alike. Tribute must also be paid to the past and present members of ACE and MO Award nominated HILLBILLY HEAVEN BAND, especially the long-standing current line-up that includes Terry Phillpot (drums), Allan Tomkins (bass), Tomi Graso (pedal steel) and the show’s award-winning co-host and vocalist, Nicki Gillis.
